@ madferu: Nina. I just found your ? from a long time ago. If your item doesn't attract a magnet all that means is that it contains no iron or steel. You might have plated spelter (a non-silver alloy) or plated brass. My bet's on brass.

And now it's September, nearly 2 months since I posted last. Mim, glad to hear about the handy-dandy ramp, but sorry it's necessary now. Please take good care of yourself, y'hear? My beginner garden did pretty well this summer. Am almost ready to retire the tomato plants (stellar!) and the zucchini (finally fell victim to blossom end rot), but the okra continue to produce and will until first frost. Have learned much and look forward to next season. 🙂

I just sorted out my closet and packed up about 20 pairs of clean jeans that are too big for me now. They're off to Goodwill tomorrow. Years ago I discovered I could buy men's jeans that fit well and saved a lotta buckos. They're better made than women's jeans and just last longer. Now I've lost weight and don't need these.

All right, this board needs a jumpstart. Here goes. My neighbor is always up to something in her yard. Today she started tearing out a wooden ramp she'd built several years ago leading to a storage shed, and when she pried off a board there was a momma possum looking back at her with a bunch of babies. Animal Control won't respond to incidents involving possums, raccoons, or skunks, and so she asked for some help. She's kind-hearted, so we enlisted the assistance of another neighbor who fashioned a noose out of PVC and electrical cord. Managed to get Momma caught and in a cage, then removed the other boards and lifted out all 8 (counted 'em) babies and got those in a bucket. We just got back from releasing them all on the arsenal near the old rock quarry. They'll be fine there. The babies were all colors and cute as buttons, and they don't yet know how to bite. We just cornered them, lifted them out by their tails and dropped them in the bucket. She wouldn't let me go get the camera so we just zipped them off as quickly as we could. She'd mentioned her little yap-yap dogs would go nuts in that area and she didn't know why.

The last of my parents generation passed away last night. Aunt Lorene (Dad's youngest sister) had been in a nursing home after a stroke some years ago that robbed her of the ability to communicate. Her own children couldn't be bothered to go see her except infrequently. I remember her as tons of fun and will miss her. She and Daddy and her sisters are up there now playing cards and dominoes, I know this.

mim - That's always been the trouble with furniture, antique or not. The cost of shipping can easily match what your bidder paid. Most won't accept that so you're sorta stuck with local pickup or consigning it. If the piece isn't huge you might look at Greyhound. If it fits in the baggage bay it will go, but then your buyer would need to get to the station to pick it up.

mim - I'd love to see some pics of young Jim. Today one of the female ferals the neighbor is feeding (we have plans to trap them both for spaying and shots and SOON) crept up all the way to the sliding door on the deck (it was warm today so the heat is off and screens are open) to chat with Howard the Immaculatum. They meowed at each other through the screen door. Howard isn't at all upset that there are 2 new cats hanging out on my deck. They want to catch squirrels, not to kill them but just to play with them, I think. They've been eyeball to eyeball with several and the squirrels just say Neener Neener and go about their business.

judy - While we had storm damage (holes in roofs, huge trees down across roofs, power lines down, etc..my front porch was crushed by huge oak limbs but the tree is still there) what caused the major outage across the entire northern half of the state was that all 8 TVA power transformers feeding to this area were destroyed. It was a fluke. TVA practices power outage responses, but they'd never done one where EVERYTHING was gone. Some parts of the city had power back after 4 days...but because they had to rebuild our power lines it took a week. Thank goodness for friends who had gas water heaters and could offer a hot shower. 😉 Makes you very humble and respectful of nature's power.

If all this board gets is ?s about antiques, that's fine, too. Thanksgiving for me will be with friends at a nice restaurant. No dirty dishes, no sweat. I have no family nearby so some other friends (widows, divorcees, singletons) and I will just do it that way and call it a holiday. Had a very good experience today with a seller. I broke a FireKing 7" spiral bowl and found one at a good price. Thing was, he wanted to send it at that expensive rate that almost equalled the price of the item. I asked if he'd just sent it parcel post, and while he agreed and was checking on that, I realized I'd be away when he'd expect payment, so I went ahead and paid full rate for it. When I got back and checked email, he'd already refunded the difference in rates via PayPal. And I got the bowl today...it's beautiful. Nice guy.

homechick - Yes, I saw that recipe for applesauce in SL...I puree mine after the slices have cooked so it's not as chunky. Wonderful stuff. And they got it right about using a variety of apples, makes it much more interesting.

OnTuesday I will be going off again with my friend to hunt furniture for her new house. This time we will be going with her daughter Sarah and Ethan the grandbaby. Will be my first time with him for any extended period. I understand he has two lower front teeth and now knows how to roll over.

I wish more of the regulars would post here (and I'm including myself). The old AB is a ghost town, and probably will stay that way until the farewell party later. I'm not such a fan of Facebook but that's where everyone is. In my book the new threaded boards are a bust and a half.

giny - It's all about the bottom line. Lovely link to religious crosses you posted on the old board. Very intersting. I'm thinking of a new antiques lesson for here, but with tree issues and tradesmen coming it might take a week or so to get it organized.

these = the chat boards. Heck of a shame we were all so helpful yet so redundant.

Earlier today I explored the new format on the threaded boards...and it's ugly and hard to read. It's already being vilified by the majority of posters, but I suppose in eBay's vernacular "hate-it hate it" translates to "Well-liked." They didn't improve anything and lost lots of good things that were there. There's a lot of white space that I am almost certain one day will be filled with ads. I am not impressed, and sorry that's all that will be left once these chat boards are retired. Another bad call by eBay.

homechick, you said a mouthful. We will never make a lasting difference in that part of the world. Bring them all home.

I just realized I am an equal opportunity appliance owner. The stove is a GE, the fridge is a Kitchen-Aid, the dishwasher is a Kenmore, the washer is a Maytag and the dryer is a Whirlpool. Apropos of nothing special.

Will someone smack me on the head and remind me WHY our troops are still in Iraq?

If you mean you'd be a pariah from eBay's kicking you out of the chats and still need a place to ask ?? about antiques then you'll fit right in.
and t-gal - You owe me. I found the answer for today's WWII ? on the old board but hate it when you put me on the spot like that. tsk.

Welcome to newbies! No, we did have the snap to set some parameters so that pariahs would be excluded. 😉 And we do love discussing out favorite fur-butts.

And I also read somewhere that people are claiming these boards are eBay's new replacement chats, created by and sponsored by eBay. Idjits abound.

Guess things will never change until the old boards are totally and forever defunct. Somebody is out there claiming these new boards are scams, out to steal people's money and information. Hoooboy.
